Two of the guys who were in my platoon while I was in the army are going back to Iraq tomorrow.
This has made me realize that as glad as I am to be out, there are things about it that I miss. While I was in Iraq if somebody shot at one of my friends I killed them. That simple. Same thing if somebody shot at me, the guys around me would kill him. Now I have no control over what happens to them. I have to sit in America watching CNN, hoping I don't hear their names and powerless to do anything to help them other than mail packages with booze and porn.
In a word, it sucks.
To top it off they're going there to a unit full of people they've never worked with before. It can't be stressed enough how important it is to know the people you're working with in combat. How they move, how they react. You need to anticipate what the actions of the man next to you will be and act accordingly, and since they don't know they're at a disadvantage.
Supposedly the unit that they're going to will be returning to the states in 2 months. Supposedly. Who knows with the way the army fucking works. We shall see. In the meantime, I suppose there's nothing to do but watch the news and pray that I don't hear a familiar name.
