The ACLU has yet another story on their website right now (aclu.org) concerning the abuse of detainees in Iraq. The article mentions how many detainees have been beaten or otherwise improperly interrogated after their capture in clear violation of the Geneva Conventions.
However, the article fails to mention what the Geneva Conventions actually say.
While my unit was in Iraq, the insurgents attacking us wore civilian clothing, bore no distinguishable flag or colors, failed to openly carry weapons and had no leader claiming responsibility for their actions.
Granted, I've been back in the U.S. for well over a year, so things could have changed since I've been in Iraq, but I doubt it.
If the ACLU ever bothered to actually read the Geneva Conventions, they would see that they state that the insurgents in Iraq attacking military and civilian targets are considered war criminals under the conventions. They would also see that when they are captured the coalition forces have every legal right to execute these prisoners if they wish.
The ACLU has repeatedly demanded that detainees of the war on terror be given legal counsel, and that those interrogating them be punished for war crimes. My question for the ACLU is, what war crimes?
If one thoroughly reads the Geneva Conventions, one would see that there has not been a single crime commited by U.S. forces. Not one. Bitch all you want about Abu Ghraib, according to the Geneva Conventions those actions were perfectly legal against the degenerate war criminals we have captured. Whether it was right or not is another debate entirely. But there was nothing illegal about it.
I have a suggestion for the members of the ACLU who insist on giving war criminals legal counsel and the same treatment as legitimate soldiers. Send your family members to Iraq. Give them a camera and one of those stupid fucking blue "press" helmets and send them walking around Baghdad until they are abducted by the war criminals you so desperately want to protect. Then watch for the video on Al Jazeera of your loved ones being beheaded and demand retribution. The American military will gladly go give hugs and kisses to the insurgents who took the heads off of your brothers and sisters and wives and children. We'll offer them lawyers and interrogate them with flowers and rainbows, and beg them not to kill innocent people anymore. Then we'll see if you still want to fight for the rights of these animals, or if you pick up a gun and kill them yourselves.
